SUMMARY REPORT ON THE AGM HELD AT THE FAMILES WEEKEND HELD IN Leicester ON SATURDAT 22 MARCH 2025
SA AGM 2025 SUMMARY
- The Submarine Family
A meeting is due to be held this month in London to discuss the winding up of the Submarine Family. Some points were made at the AGM regarding this as follows.
a). The SA is still financially sound and will continue as normal.
b). The RNRM Charity that supported TSF will continue to support the SA, WRS and Friends of the SM Museum.
c). The way ahead for the SA will be discussed in the light of the outcome of the planned meeting in London and branches kept up to date as things progress.
d). It is intended to consider forming an ‘umbrella’ group to provide a link between the groups that were covered by TSF i.e. the SA, WRS, the Friends and the serving submarine community. This will be named the Submarine Council.
2) To make it easier for major defence companies such as BAE, Rolls Royce, etc. to make charitable donations to the SA (to replace the funding from TSF) it will be considered whether the national SA Committee (SAC) should register as a charity to make this a possibility. This would not change the status or management of branches. They would not become a charity and would continue to operate as at present.
3) Change of Chairman. Iain ‘Mad dog’ Mackenzie stood down as the National Chairman having come to the end of his 3-year tenure. He has now been replaced as National Chairman by the previous Vice Chairman Andy Knox the only candidate for the position.
- Barrow Branch Proposals. The vote on both proposals failed by a significant margin. The SAC will continue to operate as previously governed by the current Management Guidelines.
- Families Weekend 2026. The venue for next year’s Families Weekend and AGM is provisionally Liverpool.
- AOB. During AOB I asked why the minutes of the AGM’s were no longer published. I felt that it was important that members should be able to read what had been discussed and decided at the meeting. The National Secretary replied that he was mindful of re-introducing the publication of minutes.
